Length and layers

Measure from the tap to the furthest point you water and add a few metres. An anti-kink garden hose with 4 or 6 layers suits regular use; an expandable garden hose is lighter and shrinks back for storage. Most UK garden hose connectors are sized for 1/2 inch hose.

Making a hose last

Drain the hose after use, store it out of direct sun on a reel or hanger, and do not leave it pressurised against a closed spray gun for hours. A hose reel cart makes winding a long hose quick enough that it actually gets done.
